The Carolina Star Board is a Volunteer Partnership
It is a cooperative effort between the North Carolina Department of Labor and representatives from companies that use a Carolina Star safety and health management system. The board is comprised of representatives from STAR companies, NCDOL STAR consultants and select business leaders from across the state. The Star Board's primary emphasis is on sharing best practices through an affordable, statewide safety conference. This conference is usually held in the fall in a central location.

About the Carolina Star Programs
Companies that choose to use the Carolina Star Program can be sure they are creating an effective point safety and health management system. With plenty of help from NCDOL and other Star companies, organizations that choose STAR may find it surprisingly easy to create a system. Many of the benefits of choosing to be a Star company flow naturally from having a system that works. Other benefits may include reduced accident and illness rate and matching decrease in insurance costs. The networking contacts and peer mentoring can also prove invaluable in creating an effective system. Other benefits include establishing a more positive, equal and cooperative relationship with NCDOL compliance inspectors and maintaining some control over how and when compliance inspectors visit your organization. Remember, while Star consultants work for the NCDOL, they are not compliance inspectors and do not issue fines--that's just not their job.
Types of STAR Programs
* Carolina Star—Recognizes work sites have a complete safety and health management system that has proven itself effective by reporting accident and illness rates that are half the statewide average for similar companies.
* Rising Star—Recognizes work sites that have good safety and health programs, but haven’t yet reached maturity or have not yet demonstrated the effectiveness of their system by bringing injuries down to an exceptional level.
* Building Star—Recognizes construction work sites that have Carolina Star quality safety and health programs. Because of the nature of their business, these safety and health systems differ from the standard Carolina Star requirements.
* Public Sector Star—Recognizes state agencies and local governments for their leadership and success in providing a safe and healthy work environment.
